Sciatica refers to any sort of pain that is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. It’s a common problem a that our chiropractic clinic works with every day. Sciatic nerve pain can be shooting, sharp, dull or even achy. Sometimes it’s associated with numbness or pins and needles. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and is made up of nerve roots that exit from the spine, through the buttocks and go down both legs ending at your feet. It controls all the sensation in your legs and the muscle function of the lower limbs.
If the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed you can experience a variety of symptoms which include pain, numbness, pins and needles, or tingling. The symptoms can radiate from the lower back and travel down one or both of your legs to your foot and toes resulting in pain and weakness. The pain can range from agonising and very severe sciatica, to very mild sciatic pain. Even simple tasks such as bending, walking, standing or even sitting can be difficult and in some cases impossible.
How to treat sciatica pain with Chiropractic, and give the most suitable sciatica pain treatment
A Chiropractor would need to investigate and examine the sciatica pain, look at the low back, its joints discs, and its nerves. It’s important to discover the origin of the pain to give sciatica pain relief. Commonly, while the leg hurts it’s rarely the source of the pain. Orthopaedic and neurological tests are performed by the Chiropractor to determine what is causing the sciatica.
For patients with sciatica, we use a combination of highly specific manual techniques such as Chiropractic adjustments, as well as associated soft tissue work (and a rehabilitation exercise programme) to relieve sciatica and reduce sciatica pain.
The spinal adjusting (manipulation) is typically used with a rehabilitation exercise programme to strengthen the spine, improve the posture, and make the spine healthy for the future. At Wollaston Spinal Health we aim to prevent a recurrence of the sciatica to all our customers in the Stourbridge area using our sciatica therapies.
